Written up at four

On the board

Six or seven things, rubbed out and rewritten

The board goes up at four every afternoon. What follows is a guide to what tends to be on it. A fixed menu would be a promise about a truck that is fifteen hundred kilometres away.

Usually on it

  • Beef from a property on the Plenty Highway, grilled, one cut at a time
  • Lamb shoulder that has been in the oven since the morning
  • A vegetable plate with bush tomato, which is not a tomato and is better
  • Damper, hot, with butter and golden syrup, which is not sophisticated and is the first thing to go

Sometimes on it

  • Kangaroo, when the supplier has it and never frozen
  • Barramundi, flown down from Darwin, on the two days a week it arrives
  • A curry on Wednesdays, which started as a joke in 2016 and is now non-negotiable

Never on it

  • Oysters, prawns, or anything else that has to come from a coast
  • Anything described as a deconstruction of anything
